Hello there everyone!

Here is a slideshow that I made of photos that I took of Sinarmas World Academy. Wow! Words can't describe it. It is like being in a resort not a school. I feel so lucky to be able to be a part of this amazing 21st Century learning space. I will coordinate the use of technology in the school and also teach the Grade 5 class. That's great because the laptop program begins in Grade 5 and I have always wanted to be able to use laptops as a learning tool. Grade 5 is the last year level in PYP so we will do the Exhibition as well!

My partner teacher is Hugo and he is so talented. He was the Vice-Principal of Sekolah Tunas Muda! He has so many ideas and is already planning for the UOIs.

Just look at the beautiful buildings! People are asking me to show a photo of the computer lab ... Well it's very, very, very BIG! If you watch the slideshow you will see it. Do you understand? The whole school is a 'computer lab'. Get it? The whole campus is Wifi so I can teach computers anywhere on the grounds - even in the garden. You see every student from Grade 5 - 12 has a Macbook and every teacher has a Macbook. The younger grades share a set of Macbooks of one set between four classes. That means that they can use them everyday.

I think that my favorite corner will be the Koi pond, or the Topeng Cafe or the Lotus Lounge ... Hmmmmm

Kindergarten 2020 Scenario
Alizka wakes up this morning excited about what the day will bring. Today, she gets to meet with her discovery group. This group of students has been pre-selected through learning traits collected by toys that she used prior to entering kindergarten and shared with the school upon enrollment. The group has similar interests and meets 3 days a week. Today, they are going on a virtual safari to Africa.

Alizka likes animals a great deal and the group is going to experience how elephant families are similar to her own. Upon entering the virtual safari, she immediately experiences the size and weight of the elephants as they are presented in a 3-D environment where she feels as if she could reach out and touch them. During the safari,

the virtual mentor points out how elephants are similar to our families and how important the mother is to the survival of the babies. Alizka gets to name one of the baby elephants and she and her teacher send a message to her mom telling her of Alizka’s new friend.

During the day, Alizka demonstrated two acts of kindness towards another student. She received a personalized award at the end of the day. A copy of the award was immediately forwarded to her parents. Her dad, while traveling, received notice on his cell phone that Alizka was recognized in school and calls up a video interface to share his excitement with her. When Alizka arrives home she finds balloons waiting complete with her mother’s outstretched arms.

High School 2020 Scenario
Eddy’s day starts when his Internet earring goes off at 6:30 with his favorite music playing. He wakes up, and sees his schedule for the day on his wall screen. He notices that he has early lunch today so he makes sure to bring a snack along with him. After getting ready, Eddy returns to grab his learning tablet and notices that he has received a bus alert with an exact GPS location. His bus is running 15 minutes late so he has some extra time to get ready. He tells his virtual mentor to identify his daily learning packet that he has received from school which contains all of his work projects, meetings and notes for the day. They are read to Eddy via voice in his earring.

Eddy has team deliverables due to be presented in his first class period. He will review the presentation with his team through his two way video tablet on the way to school. He compares his schedule to his teacher’s schedule and picks a time he can log in for the remote meeting for a 1 on 1. His calendar is automatically updated with the new appointment and a message is sent to all the team members, including the teacher.
Eddy’s virtual mentor checks the bus online and announces to Eddy that it is just turning down his street. He gathers his tablet and his gym bag and heads out the door.

Upon entering the bus, Eddy’s clothes scan his student number and the school is immediately notified that he has made the bus and will be conferencing in en route. Eddy arrives to school 15 minutes late, but has been in constant communication with his team going over last minute details for the presentation and they’re good to go. His music comes up and he listens to his favorite song as he walks across campus. He arrives and
joins the project team who are reviewing details about the Persian Gulf War that are relevant to Eddy’s school mates in Egypt on this project. Eddy reviews a vision of the history of the discussion and watches as personalized information puts the discussion into context for him. A set of questions are automatically configured for him to review and a green light goes on indicating it’s his turn to engage.

An alert appears on his tablet right before the end of the period, reminding him that he is to meet his science team outside today. Today in science, Eddy is completing his personalized learning project. This project was designed especially for Eddy’s learning style and allows him to use an observation-based instructional process. While outside, Eddy works on the effects of light on plants, using his virtual biosphere to experiment. He collects real-time data from various laboratories throughout the world, helping him
manage his unique ecosystem.

He begins a dialogue with plant specialists whom he encountered over the Internet. The software recognizes that Eddy struggles with some terminology as his interaction rate seems too low. His questions don’t seem to map directly to the content. His virtual mentor immediately provides support resources and appears on his screen ready to show and tell. The virtual mentor asks Eddy some questions and explains some of the concepts
that he is having trouble with. After finishing the tutoring session, Eddy submits his project for team review again and receives an A, the standard grade of all high school students.

Eddy heads to the cafeteria where he picks up his pre-ordered lunch and debits his student account. After lunch, Eddy has 3 more projects to check in on and then a free period. During his free period, Eddy has signed up to learn Chinese from a school in Beijing. Eddy signs in to the course and begins talking to his classmates via embedded cameras and a virtual interface for picking objects up. Students walk through the video/virtual city talking and discussing the environment around them. When Eddy doesn’t pronounce his words right, a voice monitor appears and shows Eddy the right lip and tongue movements. He repeats and one of his virtual classmates tells him “most excellent”.

After school is over, Eddy has basketball practice. Eddy’s basketball is hooked to sensors that monitor the pressure on the ball, his trajectory and his travel speed before he makes a shot. During his bench time, his video glasses show him professionals making shots and highlights past games that he has played that he reviews during his next warm up. Eddy receives an alert that his mother has to work late today and that she’s arranged for Eddy to go home with another mom, whose virtual mentor leaves Eddy a message, a picture of the car, and a time she’ll meet him at a GPS designated location. Eddy arrives home after practice and calls his girlfriend. His snack is awaiting him in the refrigerator, calories, carbs and protein all listed in his personal health indicator. Eddy spends the rest of his event going over movie reviews with his girlfriend for their weekend date.

Digital Natives vs Digital Immigrants

Today I went to a very interesting seminar about 21st Century learning at Sinarmas World School. The speaker, Toh Yee Choon from Apple, Singapore spoke about the differences between the two groups of the Digital Natives and the Digital Immigrants. You might know that Digital Natives have grown up in this Digital era surrounded by and using digital technology. The Digital Immigrants are the adults that grew up before the Digital era. This group are most of the teachers at school. I am a Digital Immigrant.

Anyway, you can try this out. Here is a fun example, this site http://www.freemosquitoringtone.org/ has the famous mosquito ring tone. This tone can only be heard by the younger generation - Digital Natives. SOME adults can hear it but not many. I can hear it initially but then it fades.

At most schools you must turn your HP off so teenagers around the world are using this as a ring tone so the teacher won't know when a student's phone rings. Maybe you should try it - he he he.

Our One Day Adventure!

Here are a few pictures from our wonderful waterfall walk. The Grade 5 went to visit this area to learn more about fragile environments. We learned that there used to be a huge forest here but the trees were cut down by illegal loggers and the remaining ones died due to the change in the environment. The walk to the waterfall was a bit of a challenge but we were really happy to see an eagle flying above the mountain.

Dreamworld Exhibition will be on Monday, 5th May.
Today we got many great ideas of how to make the exhibition more interactive:
We will invite classes using an airline ticket
Two pilots and a flight attendant will pick up the class to 'fly' them to the Grade 5 classroom.
There will be a security check on arrival to Dreamworld
All tourists will be issued a passport and a united like to Euro-dollar currency to be spent
They will be asked to view the world map
Each country will make a short promotion using a jingle.
All visitors will move around the exhibition getting stamps in their passport and sign the visitor books.

Well done Grade 5 for getting 2nd place in the Choral Reading Competition and the Door Design Competition! It feels good to be recognized for hard work, doesn't it?

I know that you are very talented and personally the trophy was not important to me. What I thought was important was that you performed professionally and really connected with the audience. Hearing the audience and watching their reaction was so exciting for me.

You have tasted success Grade 5 and you know that it comes from hard work and being able to commit to the task. Don't forget to thank God in your prayers.

A Rhyme Machine

This week in English we will write a national anthem for your country. Think about what you want to include. I have some tools to help you. We will do this on Thursday.

An online rhyme machine

You can use it to help write your Dreamworld's anthem.

In rhyming poems, you usually only need to rhyme the last word of each line. In other words, you don't need to make as many rhymes as possible. Don't write the fat cat with the hat sat with the bat on the mat and that was that. Instead try rhyming just the last word of each line, like this:

My family has a cat.
He's really, really fat.
He sat on daddy's hat.
Now daddy's hat is flat.
In fact, you don't even have to rhyme the last word of every line. The easiest way to write a rhyming poem is to rhyme the last word of every other line, like this:

Hercules avoided
baths and showers all week long.
Though it left him awfully dirty,
no one ever smelled so strong!
In the poem above, only the words long and strong are rhymed. So if you can think up just a few words that rhyme, you can write your own rhyming poetry.

I have copied this text that came with the video.

"This video clip is a fragment of a larger work. It was created after three years of research in the British Museum, London, and has been performed countless times including at the request of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in their Egyptian Gallery. We were also the dancers for the tour of Tutankhamen's funerary treasures at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco. The other dancer in this clip, Mimi, went on to perform at the Temple of Karnak by invitation of the Egyptian Government, Department of Antiquities.

It is not in any way meant to be a re-creation or interpretation of the dance of ancient Egypt; it is strictly a tableau of poses found in the art & artifacts, the beliefs, ceremonies, and symbolism of their sacred texts. There is no longer any surviving dance or music from that age due to the many ruling regimes of the Nubians, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Muslims. Unfortunately, one can only speculate how their dance and music might have looked or sounded.

The dance depicts the soul or Ba -- the ethereal, eternal part of man revisiting the tomb, and symbolic of one of the aspects of an individual that continues after death. The Ba is depicted as a human headed bird called the Bennu, and the dance contains some of the following images: a Bennu bird coming through the false door to partake of the offerings; a figure with just wings and legs: Isis standing in the Boat of Millions of Years; Selket guarding a shrine; a winged figure from a Queen's necklace; the Goose of Amun; etc. etc. Our inspiration came from the Papyrus of Ani, Chapter LXXXIII, 'The Chapter of Changing into a Bennu'.

Regarding the music, the Egyptians used a long-necked stringed instrument which was plucked, resembling the samisen of Japan. There were also long vertical flutes, square and round drums or tambors, and gilded wooden harps, sometimes accompanied by a type of castanet or just hand clapping. We chose this music (oboe and samisen) as it has the mystical feel of ancient Egypt, to us at least, and we did not want to use modern day Arab music."

A good way to see how many people who have visited your Googlepages is to put a Hit counter on the Home page. You must give your email to get a hit counter so you have to ask your parents if your are allowed to have one. They are free. Here is a good site that has lots of hit counters. You might get junk mail later on from them so you can spam any messages after you get your coding. HIT COUNTERS I have put one on my Googlepages site. It is at the bottom of the Home page. Only put it on one page.

To make it easier for you to get your photos for your Googlepages, I have made a Dropshots page for all Machines pictures. Go to http://www.dropshots.com/Grade5

You can download your pictures by right click and 'save picture as' to your computer. Then just upload it to Googlepages. I will try to upload all pictures. Please be patient as there are literally 100s! I have put a password on the page so you will need to enter it. You will not be able to see the pictures without the password. I told you in class today what the password is.

I have been looking at your Googlepages and I am very pleased with how they are coming along. Well done Grade 5! I would like to make a suggestion - please use more pictures. It is very important that you used a lot of pictures so that your site is visually interesting.

I have managed to get some extra time in the labcom this week so please bring your flash drives. We will have UOI on Thursday and an English double on Friday. In English we will finish the billycart podcasts. I will also show you how to embed video so that you can show the radio circuit videos on your site.

I have been to visit your blogs today and many of you still need to write the Charlie description. I must say that I am very impressed so far reading what has been written. Well done Grade 5! You are writing in paragraphs and including more detail.

How about we make something really cool - a video podcast? I could edit it on my Mac. Each person could choose a chapter from the book to retell. You could draw a picture about your designated chapter and I will record you reading your recount about that chapter. We could make a retelling of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I know how to format it so that you can play it on a video ipod. It will look like a virtual book with turning pages. What do you think? Please leave a comment. The Dangers of Chat

You might have tried out a chat box on your blog. These chats give an understanding of the unpredictability of the Internet. Many people in the world are kind and polite but not everybody. If you have a chat box on your site I recommend erasing it. I put one on my Masters blog as an experiment. Most of the comments there are silly. Some people even put swear words. So, if you have a chat box please erase it now.

When push comes to shove, school can be flat-out fun

THE smell of burning rubber may have been missing, but there was still a sense of fierce competition in the air when 900 children converged on Eastern Creek Raceway for a billycart showdown yesterday.

The event was organised by the NSW Department of Education and Training and the NRMA to teach children about practical design, forces and momentum, teamwork, and basic road safety.

Maxwell Warren, a year 5 student from Kangaroo Valley Public School, was breathless and excited after his team, the 3D Racers, won their heat in the endurance stage.

"While running up that hill I didn't want to look behind me," he said. "There was real pressure. But we were quick with the [rider] changeovers and seatbelts. Our spirit and our teamwork helped us win."

The children designed and built their billy carts in school classes, many starting work more than four months ago.

They were required to follow strict specifications, and teams were encouraged to use recycled materials. As a result, many carts featured wheels salvaged from golf carts, handles from shopping trolleys, and seats made from classroom chairs.

Declan Moore, Maxwell's teammate and a year 6 student, spoke proudly of his team's design.

"Our cart had wheels with ball-bearings which other teams did not have," he said.

"It's built lower to the ground so it's more aerodynamic, and it's a lot easier to push and build momentum. We also used the biggest wheels possible so that [the cart] goes further with each rotation."

Lyndall Foster, of the Department of Education and Training, said: "It's a great day and gives students the feeling that what they are doing in the classroom has meaning in the real world."

The radio announcer Adam Spencer provided lively race commentary throughout the day.

"The kids love it. It's cutting-edge technology, good old-fashioned competition, and there's the joy of watching the sugar wear off at around 2.30pm."

One of the most gracious teams was The Lightning Cart, from Heritage Christian School in Kempsey, who won their heat in the sprint event.

"It went really well," said Amber Wilson-Latimore.

"But the other teams deserve a mention because they put a lot of effort into it, and even though they didn't win they are still to be congratulated."

Pasar Merdeka has lots of parts for motorbikes.

Last Saturday I tried to find out more about where to buy the parts needed to make a Go Kart. I went to Bogor and found this market called Pasar Merdeka. It is near to Pasar Anyar and Topi Taman. Here is a shop that sold bearings. I bought 4 wheel bearings at Rp12.500 each.

Then I took the bearings to a carpenter in Babakan Madang to ask his help to make a simple Go Kart. Here is a picture of the shop in Babakan Madang.

Hi Grade 5,

It's great to 'see' all of you again online. I have been very busy this week trying to catch up with my Masters study. The teachers have to go to school this Saturday as well so I haven't had much time for blogging.

Here are some photos of me from last week at Balige village near Danau Toba. As the wife of the eldest son I had to lead the procession to the family grave. I have a basket on my head that has a plant to be planted into the grave. You can see a photo of all of us standing behind my father-in-law's grave.

Cambridge Young Learners Exams

Grade 5 will sit the Cambridge Young Learners exams on Monday, 5th November. This will be done in school hours at school and the exam fees are being paid for by SPH.

YLE (Cambridge Young Learners English Tests)
These tests are an enjoyable and non-threatening way of assessing the English of children between the ages of 7 and 12. There are three levels:
Grade 5 will sit the Flyers level.

The tests provide a gentle introduction to public exams and research shows that children find the tests highly motivating. They aim to:
sample relevant and meaningful language use
measure ability accurately and fairly
present a positive impression of international tests
promote and encourage effective learning and teaching

What do the tests involve?

Reading and Writing
This is a paper and pencil test which lasts for 40 minutes (Flyers). Texts are short and constrained by a specified set of words and structures. Children perform simple operations such as selecting and ticking, writing words and phrases in gaps, or answering open-ended questions. Papers are sent to Cambridge ESOL for marking.

Listening
This is also a paper and pencil test which lasts for 25 minutes (Flyers). As with the Reading and Writing paper, texts are limited in the language assessed to what is specified in the test specifications. Children listen to short recorded dialogues involving both child and adult speakers, and perform simple operations such as drawing lines, selecting, matching and colouring. Papers are sent to Cambridge ESOL for marking.

Speaking
This is a face-to-face test which lasts between 5 and 10 minutes with suitably qualified, experienced and trained Examiners. Children perform various activities in response to prompts from the examiner using visual prompts, and give simple information about themselves. Mrs. Jane is a registered examiner and will prepare the students for all of these tests.

Results
Every child who attempts all three components will receive an Award showing a number of shields (Cambridge crests) up to five for each component. For example, a child may obtain three shields for Reading and Writing, four shields for Listening and five shields for Speaking. The minimum Award for children who have attempted all three components is an Award with one shield for each component.
Marking is completed at Cambridge ESOL within two weeks of receiving the children's completed answer booklets. So children should receive their Awards within one month of taking their test, allowing for despatch time.
Once awarded Cambridge ESOL YLE certificates are valid for life.

Our First Right Brain Drawing Lesson

Well done Grade 5. You had a lesson drawing a Picasso sketch upside down. Here are some of the students' work. These drawings were done upside down so that the students would learn to 'see' with their right brain. The knight comes from a sketch done by a sixteenth-century German artist.

Here are some before and after drawings from people who have done the real course from 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' in America. I will be interested to see your development Grade 5. These people attended a 5 day intensive workshop that went for 8 hours a day. It will take us a lot longer as we don't have as much time to do this in.

Hi Grade 5, I'm just marking your Beatrix Potter reports. They are really, really good! I need you to post your final copy to your blog. Remember to include a picture to make the post more interesting. You have earned a couple of special drawings lessons. I hope that you are ready? You will need to bring some A3 sized paper and your graphite pencil. I have made some view finders for you which you can buy from me. They are Rp 20.000 each. I had to go to Bogor to get a special kind of hard plastic as it is safer for you to use than glass.

You will also need a drawing board. I have some at school but there was only enough board for 9 people. The size is about 70cm X 50cm or just a little larger than your drawing paper. You might prefer to have your own so you can bring it home to practice on. Your first task tomorrow will be a drawing test so you will need to bring a small hand held mirror.

Extra Help for Your Religion Report

How do you write a report? Here's how!

Look up the relevant information on the topic you have to write your report about in a book or on the Internet. Keep a record of the resources.
Prepare an outline. Outline what you want to do on a piece of paper. You could use a mind map. There should be at least:

An introduction.
Middle sections with headings, detailing your research, ideas and discussion. Keep this at about 3 different topics at the most. For this report choose - Religion explanation, History and Symbols.
A summary and/or conclusion. A summary is a retelling of what you have reported on; a conclusion draws together your feelings or arguments about the topic to reach your final point of view.

Add a bibliography. Put it in alphabetical order.
Type a rough draft. Check your spelling and punctuation.
Add pictures and post it to your blog.
