Here is another Portrait - check it out!

This was done in 6 minutes. Notice that the artist draws in the big shapes first and fills in the dark and light areas as he goes.

Good Work Grade 5!

I have read through your peer assessment comments. Well done everyone! Now you know what it is like to try to assess your work. Not easy huh? I would like to give all of you until this Wednesday to finish your assignment. You can edit your work. If you have been told to edit that could mean that you have copied and pasted. Please change your post if that has happened to you.

Online Spelling

Hi Grade 5,
I thought that you might like to try doing some of your spelling online this week.
You need to practice the Grade 5 - List 1

Extra Help for Your Religion Report

How do you write a report? Here's how!
  1. Look up the relevant information on the topic you have to write your report about in a book or on the Internet. Keep a record of the resources.
  2. Prepare an outline. Outline what you want to do on a piece of paper. You could use a mind map. There should be at least:
    • An introduction.
    • Middle sections with headings, detailing your research, ideas and discussion. Keep this at about 3 different topics at the most. For this report choose - Religion explanation, History and Symbols.
    • A summary and/or conclusion. A summary is a retelling of what you have reported on; a conclusion draws together your feelings or arguments about the topic to reach your final point of view.
  3. Add a bibliography. Put it in alphabetical order.
  4. Type a rough draft. Check your spelling and punctuation.
  5. Add pictures and post it to your blog.

A New Fun Grammar Game

Hi Grade 5,
I'm sorry that we couldn't get the Internet Safety game to load at school. I have found this new game and it's quite good. It will help you prepare for your Cambridge exam coming up soon on November 5th. You need to identify different parts of speech. CLICK HERE

Listen and Read Peter Rabbit Online

I just found this page with some stories by Beatrix Potter. CLICK HERE
Here is a game about Peter Rabbit CLICK HERE
Beatrix Potter liked to write picture letters. Here is a link to one of her letters online. CLICK HERE
Below is an actual photo of Beatrix herself.

Do you remember in the film that Beatrix's brother was really interested in insects? Even his father said that he should be an entomologist (a scientist who studies insects). Here is an actual page from Beatrix's sketchbook that shows that she liked to draw insects too. Beatrix drew this when she was 8 years old.

Beatrix Potter Introductory Paragraph

Today in English the Grade 5 students learned to write an introductory paragraph. This is to further help the students to write an introductory paragraph for their religion inquiry for UOI. We discussed that an introductory paragraph should include the following:

1. A couple of attention grabbing first sentences

2. A short explaination of the report content (What your report is about)

3. A sentence that leads to the next paragraph

The Imaginary World of Beatrix Potter

How deep is your imagination? Do you believe in the impossible? Can animals talk to us? Beatrix Potter believed that her story characters were alive. She liked to write stories about animals that behaved as though they were humans.

What do you believe in? Our new UOI!

I got the following from a site about childhood beliefs. So... Grade 5, what did you used to believe in when you were little?

I used to believe that my dogs could talk to me...all I had to do was practice barking so I could understand them. JamesB

When I was a kid I used to believe that I had to the count of 10 to turn off the light and make it to my bed to get under the covers or a monster from under the bed would get me. Of course it was MY ten-count and I always made it! JACKIE

My mum used to tell me that if i suck my thumb long enough, it would disappear.
This one really works. Qing

I used to believe that the faces or animals I could see in the clouds were actually people and animals that had just died and were going up to heaven. Eloise

My daughter Luli used to believe that all babies are born boys because they have short hair. When they get older their hair grows and they can turn into girls. That's why I think she doesn't want to have her hair cut. Mrs. Jane

What did you used to believe when you were little? Post it on your blog.

Virtual Digestion Results

Well done Grade 5! I have just marked all of your Digestion stories. You have done really well for your first online assignment. Good news. I will give you 1 language point for each point scored. That means if you got 40/40 you will get 40 language points!

My Haiku

The one above is the Haiku that I wrote in the school library. The Haiku below is the one that I did for my Masters assignment. I broke the rule of 5-7-5 syllables. The last line has 6 syllables but jewel is said as one beat 'jewel' not 'je wel'.

Learning to Draw a Portrait

Hi Grade 5,
I will go to Kemang today to my favourite art suppliers called 'Aneka Warna' in Ampera Raya. I will look for graphite pencils and other drawing equipment. In the meantime you can have a look at this amazing online drawing site. You should look at the portrait of Avril Lavigne. You can watch as she is drawn online. If it is too fast, adjust the 'draw speed'.
If you want to join the site you can click here
Rate My Drawings.

This site is a quality site. No scribble or rude pictures allowed.
I tried it out! You can see my drawing here
